We often write about other singers and bands covering Nirvana songs, but what about the songs Nirvana covered? 'The man who sold the world' was a song originally written and performed by David Bowie in the 1970's. American song writer talks about the meaning of the original song: "The feeling of the song has a sense of annoyance with himself for letting his world be rocked by fame. He’s given up his privacy, his control. His private life is public now. In this way, he’s the man who sold himself out."
If this is indeed the meaning, it's easy to see why Kurt Cobain may have felt connected to the song. It is a well known fact that Kurt didn't come to terms with his own fame and with the success of Nirvana. Nirvana's cover of this song became so well known that some thought it was an original song by the band. The cover was performed in Nirvana's famous MTV unplugged performance and fit the dark and unsettling atmosphere of that performance.
For those of you who are adventurous, we recommend hearing Lulu's cover from 1974 of the same song. It's a completely different vibe.
