One of the heart wrenching moments of Nirvana's famous MTV unplugged performance was the rendition of "Where did you sleep last night". Kurt shouting out in a raspy voice 'My girl, my girl, don't lie to me, tell me where did you sleep last night' was engraved deep into our collective memory. It all became even more chilling upon Kurt Cobain's untimely death. We wondered what was the meaning behind this song and were surprised to learn about its origins.
Mark Seliger, the photographer who took that iconic Nirvana cover shot for Rolling Stone in 1992, wanted Kurt to wear a blank T-shirt for the shoot. That request backfired on Mark, as Kurt had his own response in mind.
You may be surprised to learn that the video was originally intended to be animated. The vision for the clip was inspired by the work of The Quay brothers, a pair of experimental filmmakers who created short films using dolls and puppets.
